Odoo Enterprise to Community migration
Are your Odoo Enterprise licences weighing too much, or do you need to host your ERP yourself? We migrate your database to Odoo Community from end to end: modules replaced, data carried over, hosting set up.
Key points
- Shared data comes along: sales, purchasing, inventory, invoicing and CRM run on the same core in both editions.
- Enterprise modules are replaced one by one: by an OCA module when a maintained equivalent exists, by an Aidoo module otherwise.
- Odoo provides no procedure in this direction: the migration is rehearsed on a copy of your database before any switch.
- Licence savings are not total savings: hosting, maintenance and version upgrades become your responsibility.
- We carry out the migration from end to end, on your server or on hosting that we manage.
Leaving Odoo Enterprise: when it makes sense, when you should stay
The request almost always comes for one of these reasons: the licence bill grows with headcount, the company has to host its ERP on its own servers, or it pays for Enterprise apps it does not use.
It is not the right choice for everyone. Here is how we decide during the first call. For the details of both editions, read our Odoo Community vs Enterprise comparison.
| Migration is justified | Better to stay on Enterprise |
|---|---|
| You mostly use sales, purchasing, inventory, invoicing and CRM | Your accounting relies on Enterprise reports and automations, and your accountant depends on them |
| Licence costs grow faster than your usage | You have few users: the savings do not pay back the project |
| You have to host Odoo on-premise or with a specific provider | You rely on Odoo support and on its version upgrades |
| You already have custom modules and a technical contact | Your screens were largely built with Studio |
What replaces Odoo Enterprise modules
Community and Enterprise share the same core. The difference lies in the apps Enterprise adds. For each one, three outcomes: a module from the Odoo Community Association (OCA), an Aidoo module, or dropping a feature nobody uses.
The table lists the equivalents we check first.
| Enterprise feature | Community equivalent | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Accounting (reports, bank reconciliation) | OCA modules: account-financial-reporting, account-reconcile, mis-builder | The biggest workstream: to be validated with your accountant on a real fiscal year |
| Studio | No direct equivalent | Fields and screens created with Studio are rebuilt in a regular, versioned module |
| Documents (DMS) | OCA dms module | Files are transferred before the Enterprise module is uninstalled |
| Electronic signature | OCA modules from the sign repository | Documents already signed are archived as PDF before the switch |
| Helpdesk | OCA modules from the helpdesk repository | Open tickets are carried over by import |
| Subscriptions | OCA modules from the contract repository | Recurring invoicing is checked over a full cycle |
| Timesheets (validation) | OCA modules from the timesheet repository | Validation flows have to be configured again |
| Field Service | OCA modules from the field-service repository | It works differently: field teams need a demonstration |
| Enterprise interface | OCA web_responsive module | The screen changes: plan a short onboarding for users |
| Dashboards and spreadsheets | OCA modules from the spreadsheet repository, Aidoo Board | Existing dashboards are rebuilt |
| AI features | Aidoo (AI connector, agents) | Aidoo runs on both editions: nothing changes after the migration |
When no maintained equivalent exists, we write the module and maintain it: that is the purpose of our Odoo modules.
Leaving Odoo Online or Odoo.sh
Odoo Online and Odoo.sh are tied to the Odoo subscription. Moving to Community therefore means changing hosting at the same time as the edition.
- From Odoo Online: the backup is downloaded from the database manager. A database on an intermediary version (16.3 for instance) cannot be installed elsewhere: it first has to reach the next major version.
- From Odoo.sh: the backup is downloaded from the project, and your custom modules are already in your Git repository.
- To your server: on-premise or with the provider of your choice. You keep control of the machine, we install Odoo, backups and certificates.
- To hosting that we manage: you have no server to administer.
Our method in six steps
Odoo's documentation describes the switch from Community to Enterprise, not the reverse. In this direction, safety comes from rehearsal: everything is played on a copy of your database before production is touched.
Step 1. Audit of your database
We list the Enterprise modules installed, the ones actually used, the Studio customisations and your custom modules.
Step 2. Replacement plan and quote
For each Enterprise feature in use: OCA module, Aidoo module or a deliberate drop. You receive a quote and a before and after cost comparison.
Step 3. Trial migration
On a copy, we move the data of Enterprise modules to their equivalents, uninstall the Enterprise modules, then start the database on Community code.
Step 4. Acceptance with your teams
Your users replay their day-to-day operations on the migrated copy, starting with accounting. Each gap is fixed, then the trial migration is run again.
Step 5. Switch
Short freeze of data entry, final backup, migration, go-live. The former database is kept: rolling back remains possible.
Step 6. Follow-up after the switch
We stay available while your teams settle in, then maintenance continues under the plan you choose.
What you save, what you pay instead
The item that disappears is known: the per-user subscription. To put a figure on it with your country's price list, use our Odoo cost calculator.
On the other side, four items appear or grow.
- Hosting: a server, its backups and its monitoring.
- Maintenance: security fixes, updates of OCA and Aidoo modules.
- Version upgrades: with Enterprise, upgrading the database is included in the subscription. On Community, it becomes a project, carried out with the open source tool OpenUpgrade. See our Odoo 20 migration page.
- Support: Odoo's support stops. Your integrator takes over, for instance with our service plans.
Run the numbers over three years, migration project included. That is the comparison we prepare with you before handing you a quote.

Licences that had become too expensive and a need for on-premise hosting
For this client, two reasons added up. The rise in licence prices was pushing Odoo out of the budget, and the company had to host its ERP on its own servers.
We migrated its database to Odoo Community, installed on-premise.
The client's name is not disclosed.
Frequently asked questions
Can you move from Odoo Enterprise to Community without losing data?
Yes for the data of apps shared by both editions (sales, purchasing, inventory, invoicing, CRM), which run on the same core. Data from Enterprise-only modules has to be moved to its equivalent before uninstalling, otherwise it is deleted with the module.
Does Odoo offer an official procedure to go back to Community?
No. Odoo's documentation describes the switch from Community to Enterprise, and its upgrade service does not cover switching editions. Moving from Enterprise to Community is a project of its own, prepared and tested on a copy of the database.
How long does an Odoo Enterprise to Community migration take?
It depends on the number of Enterprise modules actually used, the amount of Studio customisation and the starting hosting. The duration is set after the audit of your database, not before.
Should you change Odoo version at the same time?
We recommend changing edition on the same version, then handling the version upgrade as a second project. The only exception: an Odoo Online database on an intermediary version, which first has to reach the next major version before it can be installed elsewhere.
What happens to Studio customisations?
Studio does not exist on Community. The fields, screens and automations you use are rebuilt in a regular module, versioned in a Git repository, which you can keep evolving afterwards.
How much does the migration cost?
The price depends on your database: it is quoted after a first call and an audit. The quote comes with a before and after cost comparison, so you know how quickly the project pays for itself.
Does Aidoo work with Odoo Community?
Yes. The Aidoo AI connector and agents run on Odoo Community as well as Odoo Enterprise, on your server or with a hosting provider.
